Overview

The Grass Type Selector takes the guesswork out of one of the most expensive lawn decisions you'll make: which grass to actually plant. Choosing the wrong species is why so many lawns thin out in shade, burn up in drought, or turn patchy under kids and pets — the seed was never suited to the site in the first place.

This tool is built for homeowners, renters starting a yard from scratch, landscapers advising clients, and anyone reseeding or overseeding an existing lawn. Instead of scoring grasses in a laboratory vacuum, it weighs the trade-offs the way an experienced turf pro would — balancing your climate, light, wear, water and time against the documented strengths and weaknesses of ten of the most widely planted turfgrasses in North America.

The result is a ranked shortlist with a transparent match score, so you can buy seed or sod with confidence rather than hope.

How It Works

  1. Set your climate region. Cool, transition, or warm — this is the single biggest filter, because a grass that survives northern winters often melts in southern summers, and vice-versa.
  2. Describe the light. Full sun, partial shade or heavy shade tells the tool how much shade tolerance the grass truly needs to stay dense.
  3. Rate foot traffic and your watering plan. Wear resistance and drought tolerance vary hugely between species, so these two answers reshape the ranking.
  4. Set your maintenance appetite. Some grasses look great only with frequent mowing and feeding; others thrive on neglect.
  5. Press Calculate. The tool scores every grass, then shows your top match with a factor-by-factor breakdown plus strong alternatives.

Formula Explanation

Each grass carries a research-based profile rated 0–10 for shade tolerance, wear tolerance, drought tolerance and maintenance demand, plus a cool/warm-season classification. Your answers are converted into the minimum level each factor requires, and every grass is scored on how well it clears that bar.

Match % = [ (0.30·Climate) + (0.25·Sun) + (0.15·Traffic) + (0.15·Water) + (0.15·Maintenance) ] × 100

Each factor is scored on a 0–1 scale. A grass that comfortably meets a requirement scores 1.0; when it falls short, the score drops in proportion to the gap — so a shade-hating grass in a shady yard is penalised, not just ranked lower.

  • Climate region fit (survives your winters & summers) 30%
  • Sun / shade tolerance 25%
  • Foot-traffic (wear) tolerance 15%
  • Drought tolerance vs. your watering plan 15%
  • Maintenance demand vs. your effort 15%

Practical Benefits

Stop wasting money on seedMatch the species to the site the first time and avoid re-seeding a lawn that was never going to thrive.
Right grass, less waterDrought-smart picks slash irrigation bills and keep lawns green through watering restrictions.
Shade that stays denseSteer away from sun-only grasses under trees, where thin turf invites weeds and moss.
Durability for real lifeHigh-traffic yards with kids and pets get species that recover from wear instead of bare-patching.
Match your free timeLow-maintenance recommendations for busy owners; high-performance turf for enthusiasts.
Confident pro adviceLandscapers can justify recommendations to clients with a clear, factor-based score.

Frequently Asked Questions

As a rule of thumb, the cool-season zone covers the northern U.S., the Pacific Northwest and Canada; the warm-season zone covers the Deep South, Gulf Coast and desert Southwest; and the transition zone runs as a band through the middle (think Kansas to Virginia) where both grass types struggle at some point in the year. If you're on a boundary, pick the answer that matches your harshest season — the one most likely to kill turf.
Often, yes. Blending compatible cool-season grasses — for example Kentucky bluegrass with tall fescue or perennial ryegrass — spreads risk and improves resilience across variable spots in a yard. Warm-season grasses generally spread aggressively and are usually planted as a single species rather than blended. Never mix cool- and warm-season types together, since they green up and go dormant at opposite times of year.
Seed is far cheaper and offers more variety, but takes weeks to establish and needs consistent moisture to germinate. Sod delivers an instant lawn and resists erosion on slopes, at a higher cost. Some warm-season grasses (like many Zoysia and hybrid Bermuda varieties) are usually installed as sod, plugs or sprigs because they don't come reliably true from seed. This tool recommends the species; your local supplier can confirm the best establishment method for it.
Look at the breakdown bars. A single lower bar shows exactly where the compromise is — for instance, strong overall but weaker on shade. You can address that with site management (thinning tree canopy for light, aerating compacted high-traffic areas, adding irrigation), or pick an alternative that scores higher on the factor that matters most to you.
