Overview
The Grass Type Selector takes the guesswork out of one of the most expensive lawn decisions you'll make: which grass to actually plant. Choosing the wrong species is why so many lawns thin out in shade, burn up in drought, or turn patchy under kids and pets — the seed was never suited to the site in the first place.
This tool is built for homeowners, renters starting a yard from scratch, landscapers advising clients, and anyone reseeding or overseeding an existing lawn. Instead of scoring grasses in a laboratory vacuum, it weighs the trade-offs the way an experienced turf pro would — balancing your climate, light, wear, water and time against the documented strengths and weaknesses of ten of the most widely planted turfgrasses in North America.
The result is a ranked shortlist with a transparent match score, so you can buy seed or sod with confidence rather than hope.
How It Works
- Set your climate region. Cool, transition, or warm — this is the single biggest filter, because a grass that survives northern winters often melts in southern summers, and vice-versa.
- Describe the light. Full sun, partial shade or heavy shade tells the tool how much shade tolerance the grass truly needs to stay dense.
- Rate foot traffic and your watering plan. Wear resistance and drought tolerance vary hugely between species, so these two answers reshape the ranking.
- Set your maintenance appetite. Some grasses look great only with frequent mowing and feeding; others thrive on neglect.
- Press Calculate. The tool scores every grass, then shows your top match with a factor-by-factor breakdown plus strong alternatives.
Formula Explanation
Each grass carries a research-based profile rated 0–10 for shade tolerance, wear tolerance, drought tolerance and maintenance demand, plus a cool/warm-season classification. Your answers are converted into the minimum level each factor requires, and every grass is scored on how well it clears that bar.
Match % = [ (0.30·Climate) + (0.25·Sun) + (0.15·Traffic) + (0.15·Water) + (0.15·Maintenance) ] × 100
Each factor is scored on a 0–1 scale. A grass that comfortably meets a requirement scores 1.0; when it falls short, the score drops in proportion to the gap — so a shade-hating grass in a shady yard is penalised, not just ranked lower.
- Climate region fit (survives your winters & summers) 30%
- Sun / shade tolerance 25%
- Foot-traffic (wear) tolerance 15%
- Drought tolerance vs. your watering plan 15%
- Maintenance demand vs. your effort 15%
