Clipping volume is surprisingly easy to underestimate — a modest yard can produce several bags of clippings in a single cut during peak growing season. Formula Explanation
Clipping volume starts from the "swept layer" — the thin slab of grass you shear off in one pass — then adjusts it to a realistic loose volume, because grass canopy is mostly air and blades don't fill that slab solidly.
Height removed = Grass height − Cutting height
Swept layer volume = Lawn area × Height removed
Loose clipping volume = Swept layer × Fill factor
Fresh weight = Loose volume × Bulk density
Nitrogen returned = Dry weight × 3.5%
The fill factor reflects how densely the canopy is packed: roughly 1.5% of the swept layer for thin turf, ~2.2% for healthy turf, and ~3.2% for lush, well-fed turf. The bulk density of fresh, loosely bagged clippings runs about 16 lb/ft³ when dry, ~22 lb/ft³ at normal moisture, and ~30 lb/ft³ when wet. Dry-matter content (used for the nitrogen estimate) ranges from about 45% when dry down to 25% when wet, and grass clippings average roughly 3.5% nitrogen by dry weight. These are practical field figures, not idealized lab values.
