Formula Explanation

The calculation follows the same steps a contractor uses on site: work out the volume of the sand layer, add a real-world buffer, then convert that volume into weight and bags.

Area = Length × Width
Base volume = Area × Depth  (depth converted to the same unit as length)
Order volume = Base volume × (1 + Allowance%)
Weight = Order volume × Sand density
Bags = Weight ÷ Bag size  (rounded up to the next whole bag)

Dry leveling/masonry sand is assumed at roughly 100 lb/ft³ (about 1,600 kg/m³), a standard real-world figure for the fine, dry sand used to topdress lawns. Actual density varies with moisture and grain size, so treat the weight as a close estimate rather than an exact figure.

Most people use a fine, dry masonry or "leveling" sand because it spreads evenly and works into the turf easily. Some prefer a sand/soil or sand/compost topdressing mix. This calculator assumes plain dry sand; if you use a heavier mix, the weight will be slightly different.
