What Is the Lawn Renovation Planner?
The Lawn Renovation Planner is a comprehensive, data-driven calculator that helps homeowners, gardeners, landscapers, and property managers design a complete lawn transformation strategy from scratch. Whether your yard is a patchy mess, invaded by weeds, or simply needs a seasonal refresh, this tool delivers a precision renovation roadmap tailored to your specific lawn size, grass species, local climate, and budget.
Rather than relying on generic "one bag per 1,000 sq ft" advice from product labels, this planner accounts for real variables: your current lawn's health, the type of grass you're growing, the season you're planting in, and your region's climate. The result is a highly personalized plan covering seed quantities, fertilizer needs, weekly watering volumes, estimated costs, and a week-by-week renovation timeline.
Whether you're starting with bare dirt or rescuing a neglected lawn, this tool takes the guesswork out of the equation and empowers you with the knowledge to invest your time and money efficiently.
How Does It Work?
Input the length and width of your lawn in feet, meters, or yards. The tool automatically calculates total square footage as the baseline for all further calculations.
Each grass species has unique seeding rates and fertility requirements. Your lawn's current condition (bare, poor, fair, good) adjusts the seed quantity — worse conditions require denser seeding for successful establishment.
Climate influences how much water your lawn needs each week. The season you plant affects germination speed and compatibility with your chosen grass type, factored into the readiness score.
Optionally enter your budget and choose between DIY, hired professional, or a mixed approach. The tool estimates total project costs and alerts you if your budget may fall short.
Receive a personalized renovation plan including material quantities, water requirements, cost estimate, a week-by-week timeline, readiness score, and expert pro tips — ready to print or save.
Formula Explanation
All calculations are based on established horticultural standards adapted for residential lawn care:
Area (sq ft) = Length × Width (converted to feet if needed)
Seed (lbs) = (Area / 1000) × Grass Seeding Rate × Condition Multiplier
Seeding rates range from 1–3 lbs/1,000 sq ft (Bermuda) to 6–8 lbs (Tall Fescue). Condition multipliers: Bare=1.5×, Poor=1.3×, Fair=1.1×, Good=1.0×
Fertilizer (lbs) = (Area / 1000) × Nitrogen Rate × Grass Factor
Standard application is 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft. Warm-season grasses use higher rates; cool-season grasses use moderate rates.
Water (gal/week) = Area × Inches/Week × 0.623
Most lawns need 1–1.5 inches/week. 0.623 converts inch-gallons to actual gallons per sq ft. Climate zone adjusts this (Arid +30%, Tropical +10%, Cold −20%).
Cost = (Seed × $4.50/lb) + (Fertilizer × $1.20/lb) + Labor Cost + Miscellaneous
Labor costs are estimated at $0.08–$0.20 per sq ft depending on DIY vs. professional. Miscellaneous covers soil amendments, tools, and watering costs.
