Formula Explanation

The calculator converts your area to square feet, applies the seeding rate for your project, and multiplies by price. In plain terms:

Seed needed (lb) = (Area in ft² ÷ 1,000) × Effective rate
Effective rate = Seeding rate × (1.0 for new lawns, 0.5 for overseeding)
Total cost = Seed needed (lb) × Price per lb

If you enter a bag size, the tool rounds up to whole bags — because you can’t buy a partial bag — and bases the purchase cost on the full bags you’d actually take home. Area conversions used: 1 m² = 10.7639 ft², 1 yd² = 9 ft², 1 acre = 43,560 ft².

It depends entirely on the grass. Tall fescue and ryegrass run around 6–10 lb per 1,000 ft², while warm-season grasses like bermuda and zoysia need only 1–2 lb. Always check your seed bag — the manufacturer’s stated rate is the most accurate figure for that specific blend.

Overseeding adds seed to turf that already exists, so you only need to fill in gaps rather than cover bare soil. A rate of roughly half the new-lawn amount is standard, which is why the calculator applies a 0.5 multiplier when you choose overseeding.

A small buffer of 5–10% is wise to cover spreader overlap, edges, and uneven ground. Entering a bag size helps here, since rounding up to whole bags usually gives you that cushion automatically. Store any surplus somewhere cool and dry.
