Formula Explanation
The math works backwards from the nutrient you want to deliver. First it finds the total pounds of that nutrient your area needs, then divides by the nutrient’s percentage in the bag to get the product weight.
Nutrient needed (lb) = Target rate × (Area ÷ 1,000)
Product needed (lb) = Nutrient needed ÷ (Nutrient % ÷ 100)
Each nutrient actually applied is then the product weight multiplied by that nutrient’s share of the bag:
N applied = Product × (N% ÷ 100) (and the same for P₂O₅ and K₂O)
Worked example: a 4,000 sq ft lawn, an 18-24-12 starter, targeting 0.75 lb N / 1,000 sq ft. Nitrogen needed = 0.75 × 4 = 3.0 lb. Product = 3.0 ÷ 0.18 = 16.67 lb. That delivers 4.00 lb P₂O₅ and 2.00 lb K₂O across the lawn.

For most lawns, nitrogen is the standard control — roughly 0.5 to 1.0 lb N per 1,000 sq ft at establishment. If your main goal is root growth on a brand-new seeding, or your soil test shows low phosphorus, basing the rate on phosphate (around 1.0 lb P₂O₅ / 1,000 sq ft) can make more sense. When in doubt, follow a soil test and the bag’s label directions.
