Overview

The Patch Repair Seed Calculator tells you how much grass seed to buy to fix bare spots, pet-urine damage, foot-traffic wear, and thin patches in an existing lawn. Repairing bare soil is not the same as light overseeding — seed has to establish from scratch, so it needs a heavier, establishment-grade rate to knit in and crowd out weeds.

It is built for homeowners, gardeners, landscapers, and groundskeepers who want to buy the right amount of seed once — without guessing, overspending on an oversized bag, or coming up short halfway through the job. Enter your patch dimensions and grass type, and you get a clear figure in both pounds and ounces, plus a buy-ready amount with a sensible buffer.

How It Works

  1. Measure your patches. Estimate the average length and width of a typical bare spot in feet. Irregular shapes are fine — use the rough rectangle that would cover each patch.
  2. Count the patches. Enter how many similar bare spots you are repairing. The tool multiplies this by the average patch size to get total area.
  3. Pick your grass type. Each species establishes at a different rate, so the correct seeding rate is applied automatically.
  4. Click Calculate. You will see the total area, the rate used, the exact seed needed, and a recommended amount to buy with a 10% buffer built in.

Formula Explanation

The calculation runs in three plain steps:

Total area (sq ft) = Patch length × Patch width × Number of patches
Seed required (lb) = (Total area ÷ 1,000) × Seeding rate
Recommended to buy = Seed required × 1.10 (10% buffer)

The seeding rate is measured in pounds per 1,000 square feet and reflects real establishment rates for bare soil, which are higher than overseeding rates. Typical values used here: Tall Fescue 8, Perennial Ryegrass 8.5, Sun & Shade Mix 6, Fine Fescue 5, Kentucky Bluegrass 3, Bermudagrass and Zoysiagrass 2, Bahiagrass 8, and Centipedegrass 0.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft. For very small patches, the result is also shown in ounces, since full pounds rarely apply.

Practical Benefits

  • Buy once, buy right. Avoid returning for a second bag mid-repair or stockpiling seed you will not use before it ages and loses viability.
  • Even, weed-resistant fill. Establishment-grade rates give dense coverage, so repaired patches blend in instead of coming up thin and patchy.
  • Accurate for small jobs. Results in ounces mean you are not forced to think in impractical fractions of a pound for a few bare spots.
  • Species-aware. A Bermuda patch and a Tall Fescue patch of the same size need very different seed quantities — this accounts for that automatically.
  • Budget clarity. Knowing the exact amount makes it easy to compare bag sizes and prices before you shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bare patches have no existing grass to help fill in, so seed must establish entirely on its own. A heavier rate produces faster, denser coverage and leaves fewer gaps for weeds to colonize. Light overseeding rates assume healthy turf is already present and would leave repaired patches thin.

Use an average. Estimate a typical patch length and width across all your bare spots, then enter the total count. If a few patches are much larger, you can run them as a separate calculation and add the results together for best accuracy.

Some seed is always lost to uneven spreading, birds, wind, and natural germination failure. A 10% buffer keeps coverage even to the edges of each patch and means you will not fall short. Leftover seed, if stored cool and dry, stays usable for touch-ups.

It is designed for patch repair, but the establishment rates used are close to new-lawn seeding rates, so it gives a solid estimate for small new areas too. For a full lawn, measure the entire area as a single large "patch" and set the count to 1.
Disclaimer: This calculator provides general estimates based on typical grass establishment seeding rates and the dimensions you enter. Actual seed requirements vary with soil condition, climate, seed quality, product blend, spreading method, and manufacturer guidance. Always check the rate printed on your seed bag and follow local planting recommendations. Results are for informational purposes only and are not a guarantee of coverage or germination.
